In 2025, organisers are featuring five key regional outback QLD Hubs and are encouraging Roadies to spend a little more time to relax, explore and enjoy en route to and from the Birdsville Races.
There are so many fantastic scenic options for you to explore and what’s a road trip without plenty of R&R!

“Gateway to the Outback“
Roma / Maranoa Regional Shire
The Roadies route from Brisbane tracks north west, a 480km drive to the picturesque town of Roma, the heart of beef country and “Gateway to the outback”. Roma is nestled in the heart of the Maranoa region of Southwest Queensland. Surrounded by sweeping plains Roma has a rich natural and social history and is home to the iconic Roma Saleyards, Australia’s largest cattle-selling facility.
The region has a rich oil and gas industry, spectacular scenery in surrounding towns such as Injune’s Carnarvon National Park, as well as great food and hospitality options throughout the region. Relax, spend time, enjoy and explore.

Explore

The Big Rig
A journey through the twists and drama of the early days of the gas and oil industries in Australia. Discover the history of natural resource exploration in the Roma region through interactive exhibits, machinery and equipment displays. Don’t miss the chance to climb the 40-metre Big Rig Tower (via stairs or lift) and experience a day in the life of a rigger! This facility is also home of Roma’s Visitor Information Centre.
Roma Cattle Saleyards
The largest cattle selling centre in Australia, with over 400,000 cattle passing through a year. Enjoy the NEW state-of-the-art interactive centre which explores the vital role of the cattle industry in the region’s community, culture, and economy, offering insights into the lives who work in the industry. Discover the stories behind the cattle, the land, and the people who contribute to one of Australia’s most important industries.


The Mucka Pub
A short drive from Roma is this character pub, the heart and soul of the small town of Muckadilla. Enjoy an ice cold beer and meal with the friendly locals

Mitchell – Great Artesian Spa
Located en route 85km directly west of Roma are the Spa’s and Visitor Information Centre of the town of Mitchell. A chance to chill out and a soak in the mineralized artesian waters is relaxing for the body and therapeutic for the soul.

Injune – Carnarvon Gorge National Park
Roadies with a little more time to explore… do not miss Carnarvon Gorge National Park, approx. 100km north of Roma near the small town of Injune. Featuring spectacular landscape and 20km of walking tracks, Aboriginal rock art, cattle duffing and bush-ranger history, towering sandstone cliffs, remnant rainforest patches, and spring-fed waterfalls. Take a guided tour or explore yourself.

Western Queensland Spirit
Situated on a 55-acre property just outside Roma, Western Queensland Spirit, is the region’s first craft distillery. The distillery was built with the purpose of bringing the best of Outback Queensland together. It now has eight products that feature botanicals from across the Outback and has opened a cellar door in 2023 that has welcomed thousands of visitors since. Enjoy the distillery bar, grab some takeaways for the Races, take a tour or even a Gin blending class! You will have a blast at this boutique distillery.

Charlotte Plains is a family-owned, operated sheep station and campground, near Cunnamulla and a fantastic camping option for Roadies with management offering discounts for all Roadies – refer to camping detail. The Artesian Hot Springs offer a naturally heated water park for guests wishing to soak in the warm mineral-rich water, while taking in the stunning views of the surrounding landscape.
In addition to the Hot Springs, the station offers an authentic Australian outback experience to visitors, combining an insight into sheep station life and occasionally offering guided tours! There is also a spectacular array of birds for birdwatchers and other animals, surrounding the campgrounds.

“Driver Reviver in Mt. Isa“
Mt ISA / Mount Isa City Shire
The Hub in Mt Isa will see the convergence of Roadies travelling southwest from the Townsville route as well as Roadies travelling southeast from the inaugural Northern Territory route. For these Roadies, Mt Isa is the perfect spot to enjoy some R&R in the “Gulf country” taking in the region’s rich mining heritage, a spot of fishing in Lake Moondarra or perhaps book guided tours and 4WD adventures. There is also the Fossil Discovery Centre, Heritage Museum and the spectacular Boodjamulla (Lawn Hill) National Park to discover. You won’t regret spending a few days exploring all that the Mt Isa City Shire has to offer.

Mt Isa Heritage Museum
Offers a glimpse into a town shaped as it is by its rich mineral bounty and mining heritage. Stroll through to the Outback Park with a central lagoon surrounded by lush naive plantings and a relaxing waterfall, inspired by nearby oasis Lawn Hill Gorge.

Lake Moondarra
Just 17km north of Mt Isa, the lake is one of the most popular places to visit for locals and tourists – spectacular Outback scenery guaranteed! The lake’s safe still water encourages swimming, boating, sailing and canoeing. It has also been stocked with barramundi to lure the anglers for an excellent spot of fishing. Permits are not required.

Riversleigh Fossil Discovery Centre
Showcases the fossils from the Riversleigh World Heritage Area. Riversleigh is part of the Australian Fossil Mammal Sites and home to one of the most significant fossil deposits worldwide that tells a unique story of the evolution of Australia’s wildlife.

Hard Times Mine Underground Tour
Descending into the mine in the Cage, you begin to explore the history of mining. You will see how the tunnels are formed and shaped by the majestic boom drills and mucking units. Get up close with the machinery and try your hand at the air-leg drill and feel the earth rumble with the firing of the blast face.

North West Tours
The local tour operator showcases the many and varied historical aspects of the region including flora, fauna and geological formations. Tours include 2-hour city tours, sunset tours at Lake Moondarra, full-day tours including adventures to beautiful Adels Grove.

Mt Isa Mines Rodeo
8th-10th August 2025Just one month prior to the Races, for those early Roadies, the Mt Isa Rodeo is the largest rodeo in the Southern Hemisphere. while the rodeo competition in the spectacular red dirt Buchanan Park arena is world-class, there are plenty of festivities all rodeo week.

“The Kangaranga Do is the street party for you“
Quilpie / Quilpie Shire
Roadies will be re-charged from a relaxing stay in the Cunnamulla Region to fire up for Quilpie’s “Kangaranga Do Festival” on Tuesday 2nd September. This event is tailor made for Birdsville Races Roadies enroute to the races. The Kangaranga Do is a fun filled family night out street party featuring music, bar, stalls, canteen and great activities for kids and adults alike including the very colourful “Bathtub Derby” plus the “Get Your Rocks Off” Competition with $1,000 prize money up for grabs.
For Roadies on an extended stay, on the return leg why not take in the annual Quilpie District Show & Rodeo which kicks off on Friday 12th – 13th Sept. While you are in town, try opal fossicking, then head out and explore Hell Hole Gorge National Park.

Take your seat on the expansive green space in front of the supersized outdoor screen for the brand-new Quilpeta Night Show. Meet your digital host, Q the Stone Curlew who will guide you through an interactive journey of the story of Quilpie stepping back some 95 million years ago. Along the way, you’ll meet giant Titanosaurs Cooper and George and learn about the Quilpie’s First Nation Maranganji people. You’ll discover the colourful Boulder Opal story and early pastoral settlements. It’s a wonderful introduction to Quilpie, its people and the beauty of the Channel Country.

National Parks
Quilpie Shire is home to some of the most beautiful national parks in Australia which include, Hell Hole Gorge National Park, Mariala National Park and Idalia National Park. The rugged landscape is scenically attractive and provides opportunities for camping and related activities such as 4WDriving, hiking, bird watching, swimming and photography.

Historic Toompine Hotel
Toompine – the pub with no town! 80km south of Quilpie, the renovated 120-year-old Toompine Hotel is all that remains of this once bustling town, which came about due to the discovery of opal nearby in the 1860s. Great meals are available from the pub day and night.

Opal Fossicking
The Council’s local fossicking area, located at the Quilpie airport, provides a real opportunity for all ages to have a go at uncovering this pretty gemstone. Just bring your own equipment, no permit is required.

Bulloo River Walk
A stroll along the Bulloo River Walk is a tranquil way to appreciate the native flora and fauna of the Bulloo River Catchment. Flora and Fauna lists are available at the information centre. The Bulloo River is an ideal place to cast a fishing line and catch a Yellowbelly or throw in a yabby pot and snare some delicious Yabbies.

The Lake Quilpie is just a short drive (4km) from downtown Quilpie. Experience a brilliant outback station stay on a 2,500-acre property running Merino sheep, beef cattle and Kalahari red goats. Free camping is available for Roadies on the western side of the Bulloo River on the entrance to town. Visit Quilpie information centre for directions.
Roadies must be fully self-contained and be able to hold both black water and grey water.

“Yabby Racing that Stops the Nation“
Windorah / Barcoo Shire
Windorah’s International Yabby Races kick off on the evening on Wednesday 3rd September at the Windorah Hotel. This must-see event captures all of the fun, colour and characters that outback QLD has to offer as pundits and spectators alike square off to cheer home their Yabby of choice. The night also features meals, bar facilities and live music. The town comes alive for one big party, the perfect warm up for the Birdsville Races. The Barcoo Shire also offers fantastic wildlife and fauna on the 12km “Nature Drive” plus blissful camping on the Cooper Creek waterways.

Welford National Park
Website
Day trip to Welford NP and you won’t be disappointed. Wind-blown sand dunes form a dramatic contrast to white-barked ghost gums, golden-green spinifex and delicate wildflowers. The Barcoo River, with its large permanent waterholes, dissects the Park. Drive the self-guided scenic tracks around the park. Go fishing (size and big limits apply). Permits required.
12km Nature Drive
The unsealed Nature Drive winds it’s way through the different landscapes between Windorah Township and Coopers Creek. 45 plants have been identified and signposted along the drive.


Cooper Creek
The best free camping spot around Windorah. The camping ground has plenty of room with bush camping sites along both sides of the creek upstream and downstream of the bridge. There are toilets on the eastern side of the bridge. Most sites overlook the creek. The Cooper is used for canoeing, fishing and birdwatching, it is the perfect place to relax.

Discover Outback towns of Jundah & Stonehenge
Jundah is Nestled above the floodplain of the Thomson River, downstream from Stonehenge, Jundah is the Administration Centre for the Barcoo Shire. Take in the Barcoo Shire Museum and the mighty Thomson River.
Stonehenge offers much more than a character outback pub. Tour the Rock Holes and take in the John Egan Pioneer Track – an 8km 4WD track where you see many spectacular views.

Sando’s Sandhills
Windorah Red Sandhills are located 12km to the West of town on the Birdsville Road. Make sure you come prepared with your favourite sunset drinks and nibbles so you can really soak up the serenity of the perfect sunset location.

The Hotel has offered free camping to Roadies on a “first in” basis with a gold coin donation to the RFDS. The hotel also offers cabins and hotel rooms for booking.
Windorah Caravan Park

The park offers powered and unpowered sites with official “overflow camping areas” at the Town Hall and in the main st. Camping provided on “first in” basis. The Park is unmanned and doesn’t have a booking system. When you arrive in town, you can head to the park and find a site. A Council employee will call and collect your fee.
