Are the Birdsville Races on your Bucket List?

With just under four weeks until the start of Australia’s famous outback racing carnival The Birdsville Races, the atmosphere and excitement is starting to build. September 2 & 3 will see around 6000 race punters and party people from all over Australia meet on the edge of the Simpson Desert to participate in on and off track shenanigans.

Off-the-track entertainment begins Thursday September 1 with novelty events of the ‘Equine Fun Day’ at the Birdsville Hotel, live music, and screenings of ‘The Back of Beyond” classic starring Tom Kruse in the Shire Hall. Entertainment continues through Friday and Saturday with quality outback racing, Fashions on the Field, trackside corporate marquees, the world famous Fred Brophy’s Boxing Troupe, live entertainment at night and much more including special guest appearances by ‘The Cowboys,’ Matt & Tom from The Amazing Race Australia.

Birdsville Race Club President David Brook said “A good season has seen Birdsville and the surrounding region transformed into a spectacle of green pastures with plenty of water. There is an abundance of birdlife on all the river systems as they meander their way through the outback to Lake Eyre, and there has never been a better time to visit the outback.” Brook continued, “We expect the first campers to be arriving within days to settle into their favourite spots scattered along the banks of Diamantina River waiting in anticipation for the 2011 XXXX Gold Birdsville Cup.”

Whilst all accommodation in Birdsville has been booked out for months in advance – there is one way to secure a room. The Birdsville Hotel’s “Ultimate Birdsville Races Package” will go up for auction on eBay on Thursday the August 4 at 8:30pm. The highest bidder will enjoy the races in comfort with 3 nights’ accommodation at the Birdsville Hotel (Thurs – Sat nights), plus 3 free tickets to Fred Brophys boxing tent, 3 Birdsville Race Club medallions which entitles the holders entry into the race course on Friday and Saturday, 3 corporate marquee tickets on Friday, free entry to entertainment in the Shire Hall on Thursday & Saturday nights, a discount on Friday night entertainment at the Shire Hall and discount on selected racing merchandise. Proceeds from the auction go to the Royal Flying Doctor Service.

This is desert thoroughbred racing at its best – with fun, fashion and entertainment. Join us at the 2011 Birdsville Races to experience an Australian racing tradition.
